About the convention
The Planning Committee for the 2017 Noritake Collectors’ Society annual convention welcomes you to sunny Phoenix, Arizona. This year’s convention theme will be Thoroughly Modern Phoenix. Liberate those poodle skirts and white buck shoes from the closet and come prepared to rock and roll your Noritake hearts out!
Compared to many other metropolitan areas in the United States, Phoenix is relatively young. It had no gold rush, no major rivers or ports, and was in the middle of a purportedly hostile desert. Yet since the mid 1800s Phoenix has prospered, and truly came of age in the mid-20th century. Population of the metropolitan area in 1950 was 375,000, but had tripled to over a million by 1970. In 1959 alone, Phoenix saw more new construction than it had in the previous three decades. Concurrent with this jump in population was the construction of modern housing, commercial buildings, and the launch of the now-ubiquitous strip mall. Phoenix retains a variety of neighborhoods, commercial buildings, churches and schools constructed during the mid-century period, which are now enjoying the resurging popularity of this iconic design.
The convention will be at the Embassy Suites Phoenix Biltmore, 2630 E Camelback Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85016, the same hotel where the NCS convention was held in 2009. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is about five miles south of the Embassy Suites. Best way to get to the hotel from the airport is to take a taxi or pre-arrange a shuttle ride. Costs may vary. Rental cars are also available at the airport, which should also be pre-arranged.
As in previous conventions, we will have socials, banquets, presentations, show-and-tell, and the always exciting auction. On our free day, visits to three local outstanding collections of art deco and mid-century Noritake ceramics are planned. Be there or be square!
Registration forms for the Convention will be mailed to all current members in spring 2017. Remember, convention attendance and participation in the auction is limited to members only, so join today!
